First talks: Tennis is also looking to Saudi Arabia – Sport

Actors, directors and other celebrities usually remain discreetly in the background in the Royal Box during tennis at Wimbledon. This week, however, Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, screenwriter Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”) and others have broken the shyness to join climate activists in speaking out on the offensive. In an open letter, they call on the All England Lawn Tennis Club to reconsider its involvement with a major bank, Barclays. The argument goes that the financing of fossil fuels promotes climate chaos, with “all due respect and love for the magic of Wimbledon”. And a sponsorship deal acts as an endorsement of this development.
