EYOF European Youth Olympic Festival: Erika Saraceni Soars to Gold in Women’s Triple Final

Maribor – Second update from the fifth day of Friday 28 July at the ongoing EYOF European Youth Olympic Festival in Slovenia. Here you will find LIVE STREAMING and timetable.

Erika Saraceni she has the eye of the tiger when she enters the platform in the women’s triple final. Forgotten by the Slovenian director, too busy following the hammer, Erika leaps over 13 meters for the first time in her career, signing 13.11 with -0.3 wind and switching to command. The historic record of Ottavia Cestonaro (13.32) is not so far away now.

In the third round, Slazchta and Benyusite also go beyond 13 but remain behind. Nothing for the blue who does 12.56 in the fourth and prepares for the bang. In the fifth turn while all the others remain still, Erika seems to fly, and lands at 13.22, improving by another 10 cm with +0.2 wind. And thank goodness because Benyusite with the sixth leap at 13.11 would have overtaken it.

Then something absolutely incredible happens. Olga Szlachta, just relegated to third place, finds the energy to overtake everyone at 13.29 and goes mad with joy, her gold belongs to her… hers for two minutes. She hasn’t counted on our Erika, who as a formidable competitor collects all her energies and leaps into the future: 1.42pm! THIRTEEN AND FORTY-TWOEEEE!!!! Gold and Italian record taken away from Ottavia Cestonaro after eleven years. Regular wind +0.2, we have found a champion.

Video Record Erika Saraceni

Paul Bologna had entered well into the final of the 400hs but unfortunately he runs out of energy at the beginning of the second corner, after a very high pace in the first half of the race, also pressed by the Greek Andreadis who collapses in the final (but keeps the silver). The Danish Von de Ahe (51.79) wins with a very careful distribution, while the blue unfortunately cannot avoid the last place with a very high time (54.39).

In the direct final of the 3000 Trust Santelia he comes in 11th time out of 14 (8’36). Difficult situation for the Ligurian middle-distance runner who desperately tries to hold on to the group but irreparably gives in when the pace picks up in the last thousand. Twelfth place for him in 8’49.
