Exhibition Celebrates the Avant-Garde Legacy of Composer Gilberto Mendes

Opening is this Thursday, July 6th, at 7pm; visitation continues until December.

Gilberto Mendes was proud to be from Santos and worked with Madrigal Ars Viva in an inventive way, always with the desire to take choral singing and music out of concert halls. He was also part of the Communist Party (PCO), was a professor at the School of Communications and Arts (ECA), at the University of São Paulo, and was the artistic director of the Música Nova festival, which resulted in a manifesto of the same name a year ago. later in 1963.

Mendes was an avant-garde and for that it takes courage, especially in a context of intense political and cultural discussion. Nationalism and cosmopolitanism coexisted in this paradoxical scenario in which the musician, professor and activist worked to create new languages of interaction between music and performing arts — musical theater —, music and concrete poetry, as well as music and cinema.

Between 1962 and 1968, Gilberto Mendes annually attended the summer course Summer courses for new music, in Darmstadt, Germany. A New music is the main inspiration for the Festival Música Nova de Santos, which he continues to direct until 2010. This contact with what was happening in Germany radically changes Mendes’ thinking. He becomes the pioneer of concrete music and random music in Brazil and is marked by this avant-garde phase, a period in which newspaper critics described his experiences as “barbaric” or “crazy”.

Because she is a multiple artist, and who worked on the frontier of different fields of art, Carmela wanted to provide the public with immersions in “islands” drawn in the format of musical notes. Thus, when walking through the exhibition, people go through a three-dimensional score. As they interact with the works and the many phrases hanging at the top of the space, together with Gilberto Mendes, they compose a new thought about contemporary musical languages in Brazil.

“Gilberto Mendes – 100” is subdivided into “Santos”, a biographical fragment that presents his work in Santos; “Sound Cinema”, a room dedicated to listening to film clips and soundtracks, such as: Ulysses in Copacabana… Surfing with James Joyce and Dorothy Lamour; in “Teatro”, the public ‘is introduced to his concept of Theater-Musical through the work Last tango in Vila Parisi. In the background, “New Music and Concrete Poetry” displays drink coke, which became a classic of the 20th century choral repertoire. Also on display are graphic pieces and documents that show Mendes’ experimentation with concrete poetry, choral singing and visual scores.
