England got three points in a duel where the archers were the protagonists.

The England team managed to get a minimal victory in their World Cup debut in a duel where the decisions of the VAR and the goalkeepers took center stage.

A fierce Haiti made it difficult for England in a match that seemed easy for the current Euro Cup champions.

The Haitian team had the first dangerous move at minute 13 of the match after Dumornay left a spectacular pass to Borgella who defined with a cross shot after a one-on-one with Earps. However, the ball ended up going over the side of the goal.

The VAR was the protagonist in this duel with three interventions in the first half in 10 minutes. The first appearance of the video arbitration occurred at minute 15 with a possible penalty for England, which Emikar Caldera decided not to award after the review.

At minute 26, the central referee decided to award the maximum penalty in favor of England after reviewing a handball from Louis in the area in the VAR. Kerly Theús saved Stanway’s shot, however the shot had to be retaken as the Haitian keeper was ahead.

Thus came the first goal of the match, again Georgia Stanway from the penalty spot and this time it did not fail in front of the Haitian goal. Stanway’s shot was the eighth penalty taken in this World Cup, the first time in history that it has been taken from eleven steps in each of the first eight matches of the tournament.

Despite being down on the scoreboard, Haiti did not give up and kept trying in the second half to get a tie against one of the favorites for the 2023 Australia-New Zealand World Cup.

Again Dumoray in the 49th minute surprised England with a shot from the edge of the area that ended up saved by Earps.

Haiti withstood the attacks of England with Kerly Theús as their star by stopping the most important arrivals.

For the 80th minute, Earps saved England from a draw after a dangerous shot from Roseline Éloissaint.

England will play their second duel against Denmark next Friday, July 28, the same day that Haiti will face China.
