Doubt looms over future of Jonathan Taylor as contract negotiations with Colts owner break down

Running backs in the NFL have been undervalued in recent years and the contractual situation of several of the running backs has shown it. Now, it seems that Jonathan Taylor and Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, will not reach an agreement to extend their working relationship.

NFL Network journalist Ian Rapoport reported that Taylor has requested to be traded to another team following a meeting with Irsay. The 24-year-old running back is in the final year of his rookie contract and his future is not guaranteed.

The Colts’ owner stated earlier in the week that the running backs could not negotiate again after the teams and players agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement. Taylor is scheduled to earn $4.3 million base salary plus an $813,000 signing bonus in the 2023 season.

The University of Wisconsin graduate led the NFL in 2021 with 1,811 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, but was only able to play in 11 games in 2022 due to an ankle injury. For his career, he has 3,841 rushing yards and 33 TDs.

Who are the other running backs for the Colts?

Should Jonathan Taylor leave, the Colts have only five running backs on the roster: veterans Zack Moss, Deon Jackson and Jake Funk along with rookies Evan Hull and Zavier Scott. Moss, Jackson and Funk spent the 2022 season with the Colts while Hull was drafted in the fifth round of the last Draft.
