Donny Warmerdam exchanges Ajax for De Graafschap, the clubs reported via the official channels on Wednesday evening. The 21-year-old defender seemed to be on his way to NAC Breda last winter, but both clubs did not reach an agreement at the time. Warmerdam joined Ajax’s youth academy in 2010 and has now signed a two-year contract with an option for an extra season at De Graafschap.
The central defender, who played in midfield in the past, has been aiming for a departure from Amsterdam for some time. Warmerdam had been a fixed value at Jong Ajax for several years, but playing minutes in the first were not forthcoming. The defender played 36 times in the Kitchen Champion Division last season, in which he scored 5 times.
The arrival of Warmerdam is very welcome for De Graafschap. The team from Doetinchem already said goodbye to twelve players this summer, including Siem de Jong (stopped), Hidde Jurjus (FC Groningen) and Giovanni Korte (transfer free). “At 21 years old, Donny is already an experienced player in the Kitchen Champion Division,” says technical director Peter Bijvelds. “He is multifunctional, in both midfield and central back, and has a very high basic level. We think that with him in our team we can better realize our ambitions.”

“I know De Graafschap as a great club with a very fanatical following,” says Warmerdam. “I noticed that in the matches I played here with Jong Ajax. I am very excited to develop into an even better player and to go for the highest achievable with the team, promotion to the Eredivisie. As a team, we have to give everything together this season.”
After Sontje Hansen and Joey Roggeveen, Warmerdam is the third player to leave Jong Ajax this summer. Where Hansen signed transfer-free with NEC, the goalkeeper left for FC Den Bosch. Warmerdam still had a contract until mid-2024 in Amsterdam, so the Doetinchemmers will probably have paid a transfer fee.
