Dominic Thiem lost in Gstaad in the round of 16

As positive as the words after Dominic Thiem’s opening victory over Alexandre Müller sounded, the disillusionment after the round of 16 defeat against Hamad Medjedovic was just as great. After all, the Austrian could have landed the long-awaited liberation in Gstaad. Instead, Thiem once again had to say goodbye to a tournament early.

The return in particular left a lot to be desired at Thiem on Wednesday. The 29-year-old barricaded himself meters behind the baseline against Medjedovic, but far too rarely brought the game device back with an appealing length. And didn’t just collect the receipt once.

Thiem had inspired his Wimbledon appearance against Stefanos Tsitsipas with courageous attacking tennis, so he acted much more passively in Gstaad. A fact that needs to be worked on in the coming weeks. The 2020 US Open winner will make his next appearance next week at the ATP 250 event in Umag.

Thiem falls out of the top 100

Thiem will no longer tackle the clay court tournament in Croatia as a top 100 player. Due to his early exit in Gstaad, the Lower Austrian, who reached the semi-finals in the Bernese Oberland twelve months ago, continues to lose ground in the world rankings.

The good news: Thiem only has positive memories of the event in Umag. In his only appearance so far in the small Croatian town, he won the title in 2015 as an up-and-coming youngster. Eight years later, however, the conditions are significantly different.
