Deforestation and Destruction: the Ongoing Battle for Conservation in Rocca di Papa

ROCCA DI PAPA (current news) – The communiqué of the movements

ilmamilio.it – press release

“Since March 2023 various associations have denounced that the coppicing on the Faete (Rocca di Papa), in addition to having cut down the chestnut wood (cultivated wood) has in fact destroyed one of the residual woods of the Castelli Romani, in particular the top of the Faete is dotted with areas where the lava flows are visible, rocky areas where the chestnut tree cannot live and which have remained covered with native trees.

The associations had asked the municipal administrations of Rocca di Papa – until the first months of 2023 – to protect this area, preventing the cutting of the entire summit area. This proposal was not taken into consideration. As a result of this, thousands of native trees were cut down, oaks, maples, flowering ash, linden trees, … even rare plants such as laburnum and all the undergrowth made up of tree heath, dogwood, dogwood. Furthermore, the cutting of the top part of the Faete caused an instability of the soil and the fall of several boulders. In fact, the top part is steeper than where the chestnut is present, and it was one of the reasons why in the past people didn’t cut in that area.

The situation of the fauna is also dramatic, in fact only in the rocky areas is the microfauna present which is becoming increasingly rare, as well as nests and roosting places for birds of prey.

The Castelli Romani Park was wanted by the population to safeguard biodiversity and the territory, but we do not think these are the right policies to implement to safeguard it”.
