Dallmayr Prize: Commemoration of deceased journalists Conolly-Smith. – Sports

It is the first major race after the German Gallop Derby in Hamburg in early July: the Dallmayr Prize starts on Sunday at the Munich-Riem racecourse. The competition, endowed with 155,000 euros, of which 100,000 euros goes to the winning team alone, is one of seven Group 1 races in Germany and the only one that goes over 2000 meters. This year, the Derby winner Fantastic Moon, ridden by jockey Rene Piechulek, will also compete.

The three-year-old stallion won the most important race of the year about four weeks ago and is being trained by Sarah Steinberg from Munich. Steinberg, who takes care of the horse with her partner Piechulek, works in her stable in Munich-Riem, just a few hundred meters from the racecourse. The main race at 2:50 p.m. will show whether Fantastic Moon will also prevail at this year’s Dallmayr Prize. There he competes against last year’s derby winner, the stallion Sammarco, trained by Peter Schiergen.

After that, the recently deceased Munich racing journalist David Conolly Smith will be commemorated this year, which is why the “Dallmayr Coupe Lukull” race will be run with the addition “David-Conolly-Smith-Smith-Memorial”. For years, the Brit was one of the media figureheads of German galloping and played a major role in the internationalization of racing. A total of ten races will take place on the racecourse on Sunday, the first starting at 11.20 a.m.
