Dallas Mavericks Exploring Options to Improve Roster, Christian Wood’s Free Agency in Consideration

The Dallas Mavericks are still looking for ways to improve their team. This could also succeed with Christian Wood’s free agency. The Big Man is still looking for a new team, a sign-and-trade deal is in the air.

Christian Wood is one of the last celebrity free agents not yet on a new team. There is hardly any capspace left, so the options for the Big Man are limited. The Los Angeles Lakers are said to be interested, but the Californians can only offer the minimum for the center.

However, according to Substack’s Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks are showing interest in working on a sign-and-trade deal should such a scenario come up. However, since the Mavs are only $9 million below the luxury tax limit, the Texans would only make such a move if they could get a player who would actually help them.

Wood came to Dallas for a first-round pick in 2022 but never really lived up to expectations. The 27-year-old only started 17 of his 67 appearances and averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists. A return to Dallas seems impossible, as there are already four centers in the squad with Dwight Powell, JaVale McGee, Richaun Holmes and rookie Dereck Lively II.

Dallas Mavericks are linked to Clint Capela

However, it cannot be ruled out that the Mavs will be active on the trade market again in order to get another center. According to Stein, there is continued interest in Hawks-Big Clint Capela, who Atlanta would still like to sell.

The Mavs could potentially be involved in a three-team deal with the Toronto Raptors should Atlanta somehow get their hands on the Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam. The Mavs were linked with Capela before the draft, but the deal didn’t materialize because, according to Stein, Atlanta wanted Josh Green in addition to the No. 10 pick.

Dallas currently has 13 players under contract, plus first-round pick Olivier-Maxence Prosper, who has yet to sign his rookie deal. In addition, rumors of possible trades from Tim Hardaway Jr. and JaVale McGee continue to circulate, most recently the two were named in a possible trade with the Detroit Pistons that could bring Dallas Bojan Bogdanovic and Killian Hayes.
