Cycling: record numbers on TV for the 2023 edition of the women’s Giro d’Italia

Over 700,000 spectators in the 9th and last road race (Sassari-Olbia). Media rights managed by the Professional Cycling League.

Positive results for women’s cycling on Rai 2 and Rai Sport (channel 58). The Women’s Giro d’Italia (whose media rights have been managed by the Professional Cycling League), which has just concluded in Olbia, after 9 stages and the success of the Dutchman of Team Movistar, Annemiek Van Vleuten (in 3rd place the Italian Gaia Realini). In fact, the greatest Italian event recorded important numbers in terms of television audience. Data that confirm the increase in popularity and appeal of “pink” bicycles.

The athletes are now awaited for another appointment at the center of the competitive season: the Tour de France. Other Italian appointments will follow in the autumn, under the aegis of the Professional Cycling League (LCP), such as the Giro di Toscana, the Giro dell’Emilia or the Tre Valli Varesine.

The success of this year’s edition can be measured above all in the numbers broadcast by live television. On the occasion of the ninth and final stage on Rai Due, an extraordinary 6.5% average was recorded with around 700,000* people tuned in throughout Italy.

The LIVE distribution abroad is also top notch. The Italian event was broadcast digitally on Eurosport.com (global). The Giro Donne was also distributed on the D+ platform and on Eurosport TV, linear, in all European countries (EU).

Distribution also planned on the GCN+ platform, in 207 countries worldwide (for which data is not yet available at the moment). All the sub-licenses that Warner/Discovery/Eurosport managed to accumulate during the 9 races scheduled for this edition should also be considered.

“The 2023 edition saw the strategic collaboration between Federciclismo (holder of the event rights) and Professional Cycling League (managed the distribution of media rights). An absolute novelty, but above all a winning method that we also want to experiment with in other projects always alongside the FCI president, Cordiano Dagnoni”, explained the Extraordinary Commissioner of the League (LCP), avv. Cesare Di Cintio. “The extraordinary audience results achieved, as well as the quality of distribution (on the domestic market and abroad), confirm this thesis, with the primary objective at the center of giving visibility to the entire movement (without ever forgetting the growth of the quality of the “product”, starting from the TV one)”.
