The Cuban Taymara Oropesa was the silver medalist in the women’s individual event, at the closing of the badminton tournament of the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.

Although he could not win the title, Oropesa completed an outstanding performance to give Cuba the only medal in that sport of rackets and shuttlecocks.

Only the Mexican Haramara Gaitán knew how to stop her on the court, with success of two sets to nil and scores of 21-18 and 21-14, which allowed her to take the gold medal in the ladies’ single.

This Thursday, the racquet player from the Island defeated Guatemalan Nikte Sotomayor 2-1, with partial scores of 21-19 and 21-11, who, like all athletes from her nation, compete under the banner of Centro Caribe Sport (CCS).

A day earlier, in the quarterfinal phase, she defeated Sabrina Solís, from Mexico, with a comeback included and scores of 16-21, 23-21 and 21-14, at the El Polvorín Sports Complex.

With that outstanding performance he had already secured at least one of the bronze medals, although of course he wanted to improve the color and he succeeded with his silver award.

On Tuesday, the Holguin debuted with a 2-0 victory against the Colombian Juliana Giraldo, in a match that was decided with scores of 21-18 and 21-15.

The Cuban badminton player increased her record in Salvadoran lands in regional events, in which she has won medals of different colors.

In Veracruz 2014, she reached gold in the mixed double event, and bronze in the women’s and team pairs; while she in Barranquilla 2018 she won the gold metal in pairs for ladies, and the silver in the individual, mixed and collective modality.

Also in San Salvador 2023, he competed for the Caribbean nation Roberto Carlos Herrera, who was unable to access the semifinal stage after losing 0-2 against the Guatemalan Yeison del Cid, who represents CCS.

Lastly, in mixed doubles, Oropesa and Herrera reached the quarterfinals, but for the pass to the semifinals they lost 0-2 (11-21 and 6-21) against the CCS duo, made up of Cristopher Martínez and Mariana Paiz.
