Controversial Comment at Wimbledon Press Conference Causes Uproar

Quirky PK moment at Wimbledon

Devastated! Youngster has to give up

“I think she’s now the closest thing to the British player”: An English journalist causes irritation with the PK of Iga Swiatek, who was eliminated against Elina Svitolina.

Elina Svitolina caused an acclaimed surprise in Wimbledon on Tuesday with her victory over world number one Iga Swiatek – and a wonderful moment at the press conference afterwards.

At the PK, Swiatek was irritated by a question from an English reporter about whether the fans’ expressions of sympathy for Svitolina had thrown the Pole off.

“I think she is now more like the British player, now that there are no longer any British players,” said the journalist – and was amazed by Swiatek.

Swiatek: “I think she’s all Ukrainian”

“I don’t really know what you mean right now – I think she’s all Ukrainian, especially considering what’s happening right now,” Swiatek retorted, implying that the sentence was inappropriate given the Russo-Ukrainian war found.

When asked the specific question, the 22-year-old replied: “I didn’t really measure the volume of the people in the audience and who they were cheering for. I found it more balanced, so I don’t really care (I don’t really care).”

The snippet of the PK went viral on social media the day after the match and drew a lot of criticism from the journalist. Tenor: It is a misplaced and embarrassing attempt to collect the Ukrainian Svitolina for England. The reporter, who repeatedly faltered when asked his question, is partly defended: he might have expressed himself unhappily and thus triggered more than intended.
