City of Leipzig Receives 14.7 Million Euro Subsidy for Former Soviet Pavilion Conversion

Leipzig/dpa – For the further conversion of the former Soviet pavilion at the old exhibition center, the city of Leipzig will receive a subsidy of 14.7 million euros from the Free State of Saxony. Part of the former exhibition hall 12 is to be converted into a biotech innovation center.

Economics Minister Martin Dulig (SPD) handed over a corresponding funding decision on Wednesday, as his ministry announced. The money comes from the funding pot for the joint task “Improvement of the regional economic structure” (GRW).

The listed Soviet Pavilion with a red star on a gold tip will be rebuilt in three sections. The Leipzig city archive has already moved into the first part, and a second part for the youth welfare office and museum depot is currently under construction. The third phase of construction is scheduled to start in 2024. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, more than 62 million euros are to be invested in the biotech innovation center. During GDR times, exhibition hall 12 was used by the Soviet Union.
