Chelsea FC: The Lurching Carriage – Can Mauricio Pochettino Save the Club?

Ever since Todd Boehly took over the reins, the carriage known as Chelsea FC has started to lurch in an alarming manner.

In September last year, the American – to the incomprehension of the fans – first kicked out successful coach Thomas Tuchel, then brought in the comparatively inexperienced Graham Potter and finally sought his salvation by spending a lot of money. A lot of money.

In the winter transfer window alone, Boehly invested 330 million euros in newcomers and 121 million euros for world champion Enzo Fernández. The Argentinian thus became the Blues’ new record transfer. But the massive investments were rarely reflected on the pitch. Chelsea degenerated into an individualist Stadl, a team never grew together.

Lampard looks forward to Pochettino: ‘I’m a big fan’

UPDATE 05/29/2023 AT 1:46 PM

Potter, who seemed hopelessly overwhelmed with his task, had to resign in April, interim solution Frank Lampard only got a measly win in eleven competitive games.

Chelsea’s shambles

In the end, the club that two years ago had won the Champions League, the most prestigious competition in club football, was left in ruins.

Qualifying for the Europeans was out of the question, the Londoners ended the season in twelfth place – from a sporting point of view, CFC was suddenly the gray mouse it was before Roman Abramovich bought it in 2003.

But those responsible want to turn things around, how should Chelsea become a big number on the island again? These days, the behavior of the bosses seems as if they would continue their haphazard course.

Mount, Havertz and Co. are leaving

With Mason Mount (Manchester United), Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli), Mateo Kovacic (Manchester City), N’Golo Kanté (Al-Ittihad) and César Azpilicueta (Atlético Madrid), six recently returned Players from the Champions League winning team have their backs at Stamford Bridge. In addition, Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal) and the two loanees Joao Félix (return to Atlético) and Denis Zakaria (return to Juventus) left the club.

In total, the departures flushed 220 million euros into the coffers. On the side of the entrances, however, it looks clearly brick. Christopher Nkunku comes from RB Leipzig for 60 million euros, Nicolas Jackson for 37 million euros from Villarreal, Romelu Lukaku returns to the island after his loan at Inter Milan – at least for the time being.

After all, they were able to win over a well-known coach: Mauricio Pochettino will from now on be in charge of the fortunes on the sidelines. At his presentation a few days ago, the Argentine, who last worked for Paris Saint-Germain, said: “It’s a pleasure and an honor for me to be joining Chelsea. We’re so excited, Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world . So the decision to come here was of course an easy one for us.”

Pochettino is full of praise for Chelsea

He then ennobled his new employer as “England’s biggest club” in the past “ten, twelve, 15 years.” Considering that Manchester City were English champions seven times in that same period and recently bagged their first Champions League title, an at least questionable assessment.

Pochettino knows that he faces a mammoth task, that he is the one who should make the change. “We hope we can form a competitive team. I’ve noticed that there are good players with a good attitude here,” he explained, announcing further activity on the transfer market: “The squad isn’t complete yet. We’re getting more bring in quality.”

The 51-year-old did not name names, but Chelsea are reportedly courting a new striker. Especially if Lukaku shouldn’t stay. “He will come back on July 12 or 13 to start pre-season. When he arrives, the first thing he will do is come to my office and say hello,” said Pochettino, looking at the Belgian. However, Inter is currently working on keeping Lukaku in the long term.

According to “Evening Standard”, Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus and Elye Wahi from HSC Montpellier are traded as possible candidates for the top.

Chelsea definitely have to step up. Compared to the other English heavyweights, the Blues are currently only competitive to a limited extent.

Pochettino with martial words

In his plan to create unity out of the blue chaos, Pochettino relies on martial words. “We have to work hard from the start and give the fans the feeling that the players are throwing everything into the games and are dying for the club.” He continued: “Chelsea’s story is about winning and being at the top. And to do that, we all have to pull together from the start and fight like animals in every game.”

In other words: Pochettino appeals to his boys to at least call up the basic virtues of football. Of course, that will not be enough.

But at Chelsea, not only Pochettino is required, especially Boehly should critically question himself and his skills. Maybe it’s time to give up the reins when it comes to sports. Otherwise the next chaos season threatens.
