PSSI Chairman (Ketum) Erick Thohir directly monitored the selection of potential U-17 Indonesian National Team (Timnas) players in Palembang. On that occasion, Erick said that this selection was intended to support the long-term plans of the Indonesian National Team.
“Indonesia is very disturbed when there is a perception that our population of 280 million cannot find the 11 best people, that is very disturbing,” said Erick during the selection which took place at Jakabaring Sport City (JSC), Palembang, Friday (14/7/2023) .
PSSI held a selection of prospective National Team players in various cities. The hope, said Erick, is that talented seeds will emerge who can become the foundation for the long-term Indonesian National Team.
“We made a breakthrough looking for superior seeds in 12 cities and today they are in South Sumatra, in Palembang. There are also legends. There is Coach Budi, we involve Coach Rudy Nere. In line with that, PSSI wants to do something sustainable. between junior players and senior players.
According to him, the results of this selection do not guarantee that Indonesia will succeed in the world championship event in the near future. However, he believes this can be a good long-term ‘investment’ for the National Team.
Moreover, said Erick, as conveyed by Coach Indra and Coach Bima Sakti, the appointment of Indonesia as the host for the U-17 World Cup will be the initial foundation for Indonesia to also form the sustainability of the U-20 and U-23. The U-20 World Cup itself will be held in 2025.
“We have to try, there’s nothing wrong with failing, but we are very wrong if we don’t dare to try,” said Erick.
As many as 150 young footballers in South Sumatra took part in the selection of prospective Indonesian U-17 National Team (Timnas) players. The selection was also attended by participants from other provinces in the vicinity, such as Jambi, Lampung and Bengkulu.
The selection which took place at the Jakabaring Sport City (JSC) Athletics Field, Palembang, Friday (14/7/2023) was directly monitored by PSSI General Chairperson (Ketum) Erick Thohir, PSSI Technical Director Indra Sjafri, and U-17 National Team Coach Bima Magic.
