British Grand Prix

A year ago Carlos Sainz at Silverstone achieved his first -and only- win in formula 1. Also the first of the three pole positions that he treasures in his curriculum. The man from Madrid was confident that this would be his definitive takeoff with Ferrari, but events have led him down a very different path. Carlos did not count on the hegemony achieved by the Red Bull and Max Verstappen pairing, nor did he count on the problems of the concept presented by those from Maranello this year, a single-seater, the SF-23, which in the last two appointments, Canada and Austria, It seems that he has finally found his way.

Between one thing and another, Sainz has not managed to get on the podium so far this year, while his teammate Charles Leclerc, despite still trailing behind in the championship, has already done so twice, in Baku (3rd ) and last Sunday in Austria (2nd). At the Red Bull Ring, The man from Madrid lived another weekend that pointed to a feat and ended in disappointment. Third in the sprint on Saturday, on Sunday, he finished fourth in the race, weighed down by his team’s strategy, and fell to sixth place due to the cascade of penalties for exceeding the track limits.

Today, on the eve of the British GP, Sainz explained that after listening to his team’s arguments, he understands that Ferrari stopped its attack on Leclerc in Austria. “They have explained it to me and I understand it. Once you analyze things calmly you always understand the team’s point of view better. You have to take into account that we had two bad pit stops, the first two of the year and at the same time. It meant losing four seconds that would have allowed me to get out in front of those three cars that passed me. It is what happens when you are behind, that you lose time, and I would have liked to go long, like Max, I had a spare wheel, but I understand why they decided to stop”, he assured.

Carlos has also assumed the FIA sanction: “In Australia I was very angry with that penalty. But this time I expected it because the whole weekend was a disaster with the issue of track limits. So I overcame it and I I made sure I tried to help Formula 1 and the FIA as much as I could to find solutions and we have to because I think this sport can’t afford another weekend like that, it doesn’t look good and it’s not good either as a driver or as a team.”

Sainz, the positive key, assures that “the best thing is that I have rhythm and I trust that sooner or later the results will arrive. I hope to reach a podium between now and the end of the year and it is a motivation. Under normal conditions we are fine, although we are still far from Red Bull, but not bad, not with Mercedes, which tore our heads off in Barcelona, or Aston Martin. So we have progressed, we have to follow that and test it with wind, one of our weak points, and do it here at Silverstone, for example, because it is a track that degrades more”, he pointed out.

And where can that second victory come? Carlos is realistic here: “For this we need Max and Red Bull to mess it up, which they have not done yet and with that, capitalize on that help, if they do not fail… it is possible that they will take all the victories this year”
