Borussia Dortmund Begins US Tour: Balancing Sporting Preparations and PR Appointments

Borussia Dortmund’s US tour starts on Monday. Coach Edin Terzic and his team have to manage the balancing act of not neglecting the sporting preparations despite the exhausting trip with numerous PR appointments. A newcomer could be added soon.

When BVB leaves Düsseldorf Airport for its eleven-day trip to the USA this afternoon, the critical phase of preparation will begin. Since the classic preparatory training camp in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland) will not take place this time, coach Edin Terzic is required to put the sport in the foreground despite the PR obligations at the stations in San Diego, Las Vegas and Chicago.

It is quite a complicated undertaking in view of the long flight times, the climatic conditions – temperatures in Las Vegas threaten to exceed 40 degrees -, the different time zones and the resulting jet lag.

BVB is testing against Manchester City and Chelsea in the USA

In order to keep the impact of the time difference on the body as low as possible, Dortmund’s pros were given a special program after the test in Erfurt (2:1) to quickly get into the right rhythm when landing in the USA. This is also important because the first part of the trip in particular should be used to work on the topics in the training sessions in San Diego that Terzic identified with his team in previous tests against Rhynern (7-0), Oberhausen (3-2) and Erfurt.

Three friendlies will take place during the trip: On July 28, BVB will play against US second division side San Diego Loyal (4:30 a.m. CEST), on July 31 against Manchester City in Las Vegas (3 a.m. CEST) and on August 3 against Chelsea in Chicago (2:30 a.m. CEST), before returning to Dortmund. In Las Vegas, the presentation of the new cup jersey is also on the agenda of the black and yellow travel convoy, which should include all players of the professional squad.

With Sabitzer, another newcomer could join during the trip

Another new signing – after Felix Nmecha and Ramy Bensebaini it would be the third of the current transfer period – could join the USA: Munich’s Marcel Sabitzer decided to move to BVB at the weekend, only the agreement between FC Bayern and Borussia had not yet been finally reached on Sunday. A fee of just under 20 million euros is under discussion for the 29-year-old midfielder, who can take on all positions at headquarters.

After returning to Dortmund, BVB only have a little over a week until the start of their competitive game in the DFB Cup against promoted regional league team TSV Schott Mainz (3:30 p.m.) on August 12. Before that, Ajax Amsterdam will be guests on August 6 (5 p.m.) for the official season opener at Signal Iduna Park.
