Belgium Loses to Croatia in Hopman Cup Opener on Clay Courts of Nice

Belgium lost to Croatia in their first group match of the Hopman Cup of tennis after losing to David Goffin et Elise Mertens against Borna Coric et Donna Vekic Thursday in the mixed doubles on the clay courts of Nice in France.

Goffin and Mertens lost 7-6 (7/5), 3-6 and 10/6 in the super tie-break in almost 2 hours of play (1h54).

Led 4-2 in the first set, Goffin and Mertens found the resources to come back to 5-5 then to 6-6. The gain of the first round was played in the decisive game where Coric and Vekic were the most solid (7 points to 5).

In the second set, the Belgians set the record straight, escaping at 3-3 to equalize at one set everywhere (6-3).

In the super tie-break, Elise Mertens and David Goffin ran behind the score to lose 10 points to 6.

Elise Mertens (WTA 30) put Belgium in charge with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Donna Vekic (WTA 22). In the process, David Goffin (ATP 111) lost in the super decisive game 6-3, 2-6, 10/4 against Borna Coric, 15th in the world.

On Friday, Belgium will face world number 1 Spain Carlos Alcaraz and of Rebeka Masarova, 72nd in the world. The Spaniards will then play against the Croats on Saturday.

The winners of each of the two groups meet in the final on Sunday. The other group saw Switzerland beat Denmark on Wednesday, which plays Thursday against France.
