Manchester United changed captain ahead of the 2023/2024 season. Bruno Fernandes reveals how Manager Erik ten Hag chose him to wear the captain’s armband.
Manchester United decided to strip the captaincy from Harry Maguire this summer. Furthermore, this position will be carried out by Bruno Fernandes, who last season often served as substitute captain when Maguire was absent.
Therefore, the selection of Fernandes himself is not surprising. However, in an interview after MU won 2-0 against Arsenal in a trial match, the Portugal international midfielder explained why Ten Hag chose him.
“It’s great to be captain of Manchester United, it’s a big achievement in my career but now there’s a big task ahead. The manager chose me because of my performance last season and the way he worked with me,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“He likes the way I work, my discipline, everything I put in, the passion, I give everything, so I don’t think anything needs to change. The approach will be the same, you don’t need to change anything,” he added.
Fernandes’ statement confirmed that he would behave as usual both on and off the pitch. He believes the team already understands his character and for the good of the team, he will still be chatty.
“You have to be as natural as possible because they all know me, they know I’m very vocal, that I try to be open with everyone, be assertive and try to help in the way that I think is best.”
“Everything I said to them was because I felt they could do good things, because they are big players in the locker room,” added the former Sampdoria and Sporting player.
