Battling through the Whistles: Taylor Fritz Speaks Out on Roland-Garros Controversy

This Friday, a few days before launching its Wimbledon, Taylor Fritz agreed to answer questions from the media Innews. During this interview, the American was asked about the episode of the whistles at Roland-Garros. As a reminder, the world No. 10 had been booed by the French public at Porte d’Auteuil. Winner ofArthur Rinderknech after a long fight of three hours where he had to face the cries of the spectators between each service, Fritz had concluded this match by making a long sign “shh”. A loyal chambering, to which the Lenglen public had responded for long minutes with pronounced whistles. So much so that the Top 10 could not answer questions on the court.

“I would appreciate it if someone had the decency to let me serve”

I played Gilles Simon at Bercy, indoors, when he was retiring, and I didn’t think it could be worse than that. So that’s what I expected before the game and it was so much worse. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people cheering on their player. I did not expect to see people cheering me on in Paris. But I would appreciate the decency to let me serve a second time after I missed my first serve. Throwing a party every time I miss a first serve is pretty crazy. Every time I threw the ball to serve, I didn’t feel like going because I expected to have to catch it because someone was going to scream. I didn’t want to do anything during the match because it was going to make things worse and it was already crazy. I felt like I was being respectful because I didn’t want it to get worse. Then, at the end, I said, ‘Anyway, if I go through this for three hours, I’m allowed to do it, that’s fine.’ I feel like the fans should understand that if they do this to me for three hours, then I’m well within the bounds of what I can do. It will certainly not be the same at Wimbledon.
