Argentine National Basketball Team Begins Preparations for Olympic Pre-Qualifier with First Test Match

The Argentine team plays its first test. The “new” selected by Pablo Prigioni, with many young players, is preparing for Europe to face the great challenge of the year, the Olympic Pre-qualifier, which will be played in Santiago del Estero from August 14 to 20. Without the 2023 World Cup (did not qualify) Argentina is betting on staying with the only place granted by the tournament to enter the 2024 Pre-Olympic.

The team led by Facundo Campazzo, plays its first preparation match. In Nou Congost de Manresa, Argentina is measured with the selection of Catalonia. The match will be played from 3:30 p.m. and can be followed on the BasquetPass TV platform.

The team led by Prigioni, now with 15 players, trained in Alicante and from Monday settled in Barcelona for the game against Catalonia, for the 100th anniversary of the Federation of that Spanish region.

For the match, the Cordovan DT rested Luca Vildoza, Carlos Delfino (the last to join the practices) and also Juan Ignacio Marcos (due to hamstring contracture).

The Catalan national team, directed by Pedro Martínez, has players who mostly play in the clubs of Spain’s Liga ACB. The squad includes Pau Ribas (Joventut Badalona), José Nogués (Ourense), Miquel Salvó (Gran Canaria), Lluis Costa (Coviran Granada), Xavi Rabaseda (Bilbao), Joel Parra (Barcelona), Guillem Jou (Manresa), Eric Vila (Girona), Edu Gatell (Alicante), Ferran Bassas (Gran Canaria), Pierre Oriola (AEK Atenas, Greece), and Dani Pérez (Manresa).

The Argentinian party

After a “hot” start from Catalonia, Argentina began to make its footing, from defense. The local team had an 8-point advantage: 15-7 in just over 5 minutes when Prigioni’s team came into play. The bank’s income, mainly from Gonzalo Corbalán and Máximo Fjellerup, energized the team, which closed the first quarter with a 14-0 run and led by 21-15.

With the return of Campazzo, Argentina continued to dominate the game with the triples. The three-point shots converted by Juan Francisco Fernández and one more by Lucio Redivo and a run by Patricio Garino stretched the maximum difference of 19 points: 37-18 in four minutes.

The local sought to adjust the mark and find better shots against the Argentine dominance and narrowed the margin. But the selection had variants. Redivo, with 3/3 in triples, closed the first half as the team’s top scorer with 9 points, seconded by Campazzo, Fernández and Corvalán, with 7 points each, leading 49 to 31.

In Argentina, the two members of the U19 World Cup, Lee Aaliya and Santiago Trouet from Cordoba, made their debut in the senior team.
