Annemiek van Vleuten also won the Giro Donne in her last year as a professional. The Dutch from Movistar was once again supreme in the Italian stage race this year.

With her fourth overall victory in Italy, Van Vleuten is level with compatriot Anna van der Breggen, who won the round in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2021. Van Vleuten previously won the Giro in 2018, 2019 and 2022.

Forty-year-old Van Vleuten dominated this year’s stage race, which ended on Sunday with a stage in Sardinia. Van Vleuten won three stages and was minutes ahead of her competitors before the start of the final stage.

While Van Vleuten crossed the line without any problems, a bunch sprint was fought for the last stage win of this edition of the Giro Donne. The Italian Chiara Consonni triumphed in it, who narrowly stayed ahead of Marianne Vos. New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston was third.

Van Vleuten in the last year of his career

Van Vleuten also won the Vuelta earlier this year after a fierce battle with Demi Vollering. Later this summer, the Dutch can conquer the treble for the second year in a row. Last year she won the Vuelta, Giro and Tour de France.

Last season, Van Vleuten also won the world title in addition to the three Grand Tours in Australia. More than a year ago, even before last year’s Giro Donne, she had already announced that 2023 would be her last year as a professional.

Another duel with Vollering, her main competitor, awaits next month in the Tour. The South Holland rider from SD Worx dropped the Giro Donne and, after her second place last year, is now aiming for the overall victory in France. The World Cup will be held in Glasgow in August.
