There have been defeats – also here in Wimbledon – which Alexander Zverev found much more difficult to accept than this 3: 6, 6: 7 (5) and 6: 7 (5) against Matteo Berrettini on Saturday evening. And so a disappointed but tidy Zverev took stock of his three appearances in the tennis Mecca 2023 shortly before half past ten. The last one was one of his best here ever, according to Zverev.

There is little to add. Zverev served consistently well throughout the three sets, with 81 percent of the first serves landing in the first field. A better rate than Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, boasted. When the score was 3: 4 in the third round, Zverev showed strong nerves and fended off four breakballs, which would probably have led to an even earlier end. This sequence was predestined to turn the match around. But Matteo Berrettini had other ideas.

Zverev and Berrettini complain about the darkness

Zverev was asked at the press conference what he would have said to his conqueror on the net. The German number one is convinced that he can win the title, also given the fact that the Italian was hardly able to collect any match practice before Wimbledon. “We’re not on ashes here, where a match lasts six hours.”

In any case, the organizers had once again made it exciting with their decision not to close the roof until the announced rain had already pelted down on Court 1. It was already too dark before that, said Zverev, he and Berrettini had warned the referee to take precautions right away. Vain. The transformation into an indoor event did not change the characteristics of the match: Zverev and Berrettini fought an incredibly concentrated duel. In which Berrettini in the tiebreaks the little nuance was better.

Next assignment: Hamburg

For Alexander Zverev it is now time to go back to Monte Carlo, the next sporting event will be in Hamburg at Rothenbaum. After that it goes to North America, Toronto and Cincinnati call. And as the penultimate highlight of the year, the US Open. There have been three premiere winners at Grand Slam level since 2020 with Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz. A tradition that Alexander Zverev could continue in the form of Wimbledon.
