Alex Michelsen could not be stopped in Newport even by record champion John Isner.

One can hardly imagine a more difficult task before a semi-final, because after all, the American John Isner has already won the ATP tournament in Newport four times.

Nevertheless, 18-year-old Alex Michelsen was at eye level against his 20-year-old compatriot from the start and postponed the decision of the first round to the tie-break after defending against a total of three breakballs. There the teenager managed the first mini-break at the third point with a strong backhand pass ball, but he still had to go into extra time and secured the decider 8:6.

In the second set, Michelsen started furiously and at 30:30 in the first game he had a break opportunity with a forehand return winner, which he was able to use. With no break chances on either side in the further course of the set, the current number 190 in the world was able to serve without losing a point in the last game to win 7: 6 (6), 6: 4 after 1:41 hours.

The dream run continues for Michelsen. Before the tournament in the home of the tennis Hall of Fame, the Californian only started at the ATP tournament in Mallorca in the main draw of an ATP tournament and lost there in the first round to the eventual winner Christopher Eubanks in three sets. Last week he won his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour on Hard Court in Chicago and is currently on a 9-0 winning streak on the Pro Circuit.

Mannarino wins against compatriot Humbert

In the first semi-final, two Frenchmen faced off, who had already had great success on grass and therefore willingly made the trip across the pond to extend the season on fast skating after Wimbledon. Adrian Mannarino secured his only ATP title on this surface in s’Hertogenbosch in 2019, while Ugo Humbert triumphed at the ATP 500 tournament in Halle in 2021.

Mannarino secured the first break in the third game and was able to pull away to 4-1 in the first set. After both players lost one serve, the 35-year-old was able to finish his lead in winning the first round.

In the second act, the current No. 38 in the world was able to take the service from his 25-year-old opponent again in the third game and, when the score was 5: 3, converted his fifth match point to a 6: 4, 6: 3 success after 1:47 hours of play.
