African Nations Compete in Women’s World Cup in Australia

Dakar, Jul 20 (APS) – Nigeria, one of the four representatives of Africa at the women’s world cup which started this Thursday in Australia, will face Friday at 2:30 GMT, in Canada.

This year, the Women’s World Cup, which is in its ninth edition, is being held in Australia and New Zealand. Thirty-two teams are taking part for the first time.

The African continent is represented by South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria and Zambia.

In this edition of the Women’s World Cup, which will continue until August 20, Nigeria shares Pool B with Australia and Ireland.

The Super Falcons are captained by striker Asisat Oshoala, five-time winner of the Confederation of African Football’s Most Valuable Player award.

Zambia, third in the last edition of the African Women’s Cup of Nations, will start the world competition on Saturday at 7:00 GMT against Japan, the winner of the 2011 edition.

Zambia shares Pool C also with Croatia and Spain.

Zambians can count on young striker Barbra Banda to try to win the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

South Africa, the reigning African champions, will meet Sweden on Sunday at 5:00 a.m. GMT. The Swedes took third place in the last edition, that of 2019, which took place in France.

The Banyana Banyana of South Africa, with their famous striker Thembi Kgatlana (27), will also oppose the Argentines and the Italians, who are part of Pool G.*

Finalist of CAN 2022, which took place at home, Morocco will be the last African selection to enter the competition. The Atlas Lionesses will challenge Germany, a double world champion (2003 and 2007).

Colombia and South Korea are in pool H, that of Morocco.

For its second participation in this competition, the Moroccan team will be able to count on the best player of CAN 2022, midfielder (32) Ghizlane Chebbak.

The United States is the most successful nation with four trophies (1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019).

Only four countries have won the Women’s World Cup: Germany (2003 and 2007), Norway (1995), Japan (2011) and the United States.
