With 12 casts and more than 450 boys, girls and young musicians on stage, belonging to the FOJI Coquimbo Youth Symphony Orchestra and different orchestras from the region (from Coquimbo, Ovalle and La Serena), this Saturday from 6:00 p.m. A memorable concert was held at the Monumental Coliseum of La Serena, in homage to maestro Jorge Peña Hen.

The activity was carried out as part of the activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coup d’état and the Artistic Education Week, which in 2023 was dedicated to the memory of the great Chilean musician and educator, promoter of symphony orchestras, choirs, a music conservatory and experimental art schools.

The Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Jaime de Aguirre was present, who stated that “with this tribute to Jorge Peña Hen we want to thank on behalf of so many, boys, girls and young people who have known and found a path and meaning of life in music. They are the ones who receive the incalculable artistic heritage to learn, train musically and to bring their memory to the present and build a future where their legacy remains alive”.

The concert had a repertoire directed by Juan Pablo Aguayo and Daniel Flores, which included works by Los Jaivas, Violeta Parra, Beethoven, Mozart, Manuel Veas and the well-remembered director Jorge Peña Hen.

The Coliseum was fully attended and the event was also broadcast via streaming on the platform of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage chilecultura.gob.cl

This massive tribute is part of the activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coup d’état in Chile and the Artistic Education Week 2023, organized by the Ministry of Cultures, Ministry of Education, FOJI, Balmaceda Arte Joven, the Regional Education Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) and the University of Chile, with the support of the University of La Serena and the Municipality of La Serena.

This year’s SEA 2023 had the motto “Create Collective Universes” and was dedicated to the memory of Jorge Peña Hen, musician, educator and creator -in the city of La Serena- of the first children’s orchestra in Chile and Latin America and inspiration for what later became the Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles (FOJI), who was assassinated by the dictatorship on October 16, 1973 in the case known as “The Caravan of Death”.

In the act there was delivery of recognitions to the participating bands and local creators.
