World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 Announces Inclusive Sports Tournaments

The organization of the World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023 announced today that the two tournaments, open to mixed teams, will take place on the 2nd of August, between 14:00 and 20:00, with some inclusive sports.

“During the afternoon of the 2nd of August, in Pavilion 2 of the University Stadium, with the support and organization of the Benfica Foundation, pilgrims can participate in various Inclusive sports stations, experiencing sports such as Blind Football, Walking Football and Korfball”, said those responsible for the WYD Local Organizing Committee.

This inclusion aims to give expression to the thinking of Pope Francis, who considers that “sport can be a symbol of unity for a society”, they add.

Registration for both tournaments runs until June 30, participants must be between 16 and 30 years old.

The “Youth Festival”, which will take place within the scope of WYD, will feature 480 events in 100 spaces in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.

The festival will take place under the motto “Make noise, get up from the sofa, gather your friends and come live youth”.

In addition to sports, music, cinema, exhibitions, theatre, dance, conferences and religious events will make up the program of this festival, with the organization considering that, as far as Lisbon is concerned, it will be an “incredibly diverse and multicultural show where music, dance and art will invade the parks and squares of the city”.

The festival, with free admission and aimed at all ages, includes two sports tournaments, 10 plays, 15 films, 38 conferences, 290 concerts and 55 religious and meeting events, involving participants from over 50 countries.

Lisbon was the city chosen by Pope Francis for the next edition of World Youth Day, which will take place between the 1st and 6th of August this year.

WYD was born on the initiative of Pope John Paul II, after the success of the meeting promoted in 1985 in Rome, in the International Year of Youth.

The first edition took place in 1986, in Rome, having already passed through Buenos Aires (1987), Santiago de Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris (1997), Rome (2000 ), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), Madrid (2011), Rio de Janeiro (2013), Krakow (2016) and Panama (2019).

This year’s edition was initially scheduled for 2022, but was postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Pope Francis was the first person to register for WYD Lisbon 2023, on October 23, 2022, at the Vatican, after the celebration of the Angelus. This gesture marked the worldwide opening of registration for the world meeting of young people with the Pope.

So far, more than 650,000 young people have started the registration process.
