Women and sport, the contribution to the growth of the country

Censis report and “Fight like a girl” project presented at CONI

Rome, June 7. There are almost 20 million Italians who play sports, occasionally or continuously: of these, over 8 and a half million are women and represent 43.3% of the total number of sportsmen. Considering that women are 51.1% of the population, it is evident that a gender gap persists in sport, which however has gradually narrowed in recent years in which competitive athletes have grown above all. This is one of the main data that emerges from the Censis Report entitled “Women, work and sport in Italy. For the growth of the territories and of the country”. The study was discussed at the CONI Hall of Honor on the occasion of the presentation of the social sustainability project carried out by the Lottomatica Foundation and Fijlkam, the Italian Federation of Judo Wrestling Karate Martial Arts.

The report highlights how without women who work, and without women who play sports, the country will not grow, or at least will grow less than it could. For this reason, increasing the number of practitioners is not only a matter of social justice and equal opportunities, but must also arise as a matter of development and national interest.

“Sport promotes the values of inclusion, cooperation and respect but unfortunately, even in this area there are sometimes gender disparities and imbalances that need to be eliminated through a plurality of actions”, commented the Vice President of Coni Silvia Salis, who then she added: “Where women’s talent is not properly valued or considered or, worse still, humiliated, the consequences weigh on their lives and on society as a whole, which finds itself having to do without precious resources for skills and skills. That of women, and of women who play sports, is a fundamental contribution to the growth of the territories and of the whole country”.

29.2% of women over three years old practice at least one sport (twenty years ago it was 23.3%), and of these 6 and a half million (21.8%) do it continuously (twenty years ago was 15.7%). 12 million women (40.6% of the total) are still excluded from this mass practice.

The “Fight like a girl” project signed by the Lottomatica Foundation and Fijlkam, aims to encourage the diffusion of female sports practice in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country, especially in Southern Italy. In this sense Fijlkam will organize free judo and karate courses dedicated to female students from five areas of the country starting from next October and until May 2024: Naples and Casal di Principe in Campania, Taranto in Puglia, Gela in Sicily and Lamezia Terme in Calabria. In each area, Fijlkam has identified a sports club belonging to the federation which will carry out its courses free of charge at a school in the area, with which individual collaboration agreements are envisaged, and at its facilities. In this sense, the Lottomatica Foundation will help support the improvements to the sports facilities and finance the equipment that will become necessary as part of the project.

“We are very happy with this agreement between the Lottomatica Foundation and Fijlkam – underlined Guglielmo Angelozzi, Chief Executive Officer of Lottomatica – the commitment to sport and gender equality characterizes all the activities and identity of Lottomatica, whose social commitment our foundation is a social expression. In this sense, the Censis Report offers the information and contextual analyzes useful for understanding where we are and what to do to break down any form of barrier. We must guarantee maximum equality also in sport which represents a precious tool of empowerment and emancipation”.
