El Más Grande won 2-0 against Fluminense at the Monumental and paved their chances of qualifying for the round of 16.
Martín Demichelis’s team jumped onto the green grass of the Monumental knowing that tonight in Núñez there was much more at stake than three points. The Millionaire faced perhaps the most difficult challenge so far in the competition, due to the rival’s hierarchy, but also due to the mathematical issue. -What happens if Sporting Cristal beats Fluminense? The Millionaire must win his last game at the Monumental against The Strongest to reach 10 points and thus beat Fluminense. Depending on the goal difference of each game, the Biggest could even finish first in their group, above Sporting Cristal. In that case, Fluminense and The Strongest would be eliminated.
-What happens if Fluminense beats Sporting Cristal? River will only need a draw to qualify for the round of 16. In that case, it will reach 8 units and will be in second place. Sporting Cristal and The Strongest, both with 7 points, will be out of the race.
-And if the two games end tied? In that case, the number of goals scored by the two teams will begin to run. Today River and Sporting Cristal have the same number of points (7) and the same goal difference (-2). The Millionaire was second in the standings because he has more goals in his favour: 11 against 9 for the Peruvians. In the hypothetical case that the Greatest equals 0 to 0, the Peruvian team must tie by more than two goals to overcome Demichelis’s team. A long shot, but a chance nonetheless.
