In all likelihood, Oliver Burke has no future at SV Werder Bremen. Werder’s head of professional football, Clemens Fritz, indicated this to the DeichStube.
Bremen – The fans decided – and named Niklas Schmidt the winner. They recently voted his wonderful goal from distance to make it 2-1 in the home game against FC Bayern Munich via Instagram as the Werder goal of the season, which is absolutely understandable given the beauty of the shot – and yet raises a question: what is it actually with Oliver Burke?
His winning goal in the spectacular 3-2 win in Dortmund could not keep up with Schmidt in terms of pure football aesthetics, but for what was probably the most emotional celebration of the entire season SV Werder Bremen taken care of. A goal that will undoubtedly be remembered. And not just on the Osterdeich. A team that was 2-0 down in the Bundesliga after 89 minutes had never won before. The best value in Bremen is therefore inextricably linked to the name Oliver Burkefor whom it is very unlikely that there will be any more Werder goals because he is due to leave the club before the start of the 2023/24 season.
Oliver Burke is expected back at Werder Bremen – but he should still go

The 26-year-old attacker is currently still on summer vacation, during which he – at least at times – should not have thought too much about football.

Just a few days ago Oliver Burke announced his engagement to the English TV presenter and singer Megan McKenna (30) on his Instagram channel, to whom he had proposed at the posh “One & Only Resort” in Boka Bay, Montenegro – including a yacht ride and fireworks. However, the professional is expected back at Bremen’s Weser Stadium on Monday, July 3rd, if for Werder Bremen Bundesliga squad the obligatory performance diagnostics are due before two days later they go to the training ground together as a team for the first time.
Oliver Burke still has a contract with Werder Bremen until 2025
“He will be there at the start of training and can take on the competition on the offensive again with us,” explains Fritz, who was on a free transfer at the time Oliver Burke (joined from Sheffield United) last summer on a contract until 2025 Werder Bremen equipped and had hoped for the breakthrough of the fast-paced striker. As can be heard, the player himself would like to play in England in the future and is said to have been looking for a new club together with his advisors for a long time.
Not just at Werder Bremen: Oliver Burke was unsuccessful at RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga
Da Burke’s contract with Werder Bremen is still valid for two years, it could theoretically stay in Bremen and make a new start in the Bundesliga – but he would not have much chance of playing time under head coach Ole Werner. In Dawid Kownacki (comes on a free transfer from second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf), Justin Njinmah (returns after a loan to Borussia Dortmund II) and Nick Woltemade (returns after a loan to second division promoted team SV Elversberg), Bremen already have three new offensive players on board for the upcoming season season planned. In addition, the club is still hoping for a whereabouts of its enormously successful strike duo Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch. The contracts of both players – Ducksch’s runs until 2024, Füllkrug’s even until 2025 – are to be extended on better terms. Even if that doesn’t work out in both cases in the end, for Oliver Burke hardly a position in the squad remains open, which should lead to a parallel in the career of the Scot.
After RB Leipzig transferred a whopping 15 million euros to Nottingham Forrest for Burke in 2016, the striker moved on to West Brom after a (less successful) Bundesliga season. And in Bremen, too, there is currently a lot to suggest that Oliver Burke moves on after just a year. (dco)
