ALMERE – Top sport Flevoland introduces Almere’s sport toppers to you in an interview in the monthly column ‘Toppers of the Future’. This month: badminton talent Quinlen Chau.

Quinlen, now 13, has been playing badminton since he was seven. He trains at RTC Badminton Almere, his club BV Almere and at Papendal Arnhem with the Dutch youth selection U15. Next year he will make the switch to U17 and would like to play in the senior league 4th division.
“As a U17 youth player, I want to play foreign tournaments and gain a lot of international experience,” says Quinlen. That means a lot of training and travelling, does Quinlen still have time to relax? “I can never sleep in because I get up at six every day to train. But I don’t mind at all because badminton is the best thing there is! When I have some free time, I often go back to training or resting and gaming. And watching series and binge-watching”, says this fanatical badminton player.

Last year, Quinlen won his first senior tournament in men’s singles 7, which he is rightfully proud of. In addition, he recently came first at the Master Amersfoort tournament in men’s singles 6, the first Master tournament in which he participated and he was allowed to play for the Netherlands during the 8-nations tournament in Germany. The first steps towards his ultimate dream, participation in the Olympic Games, have been taken and his perseverance, speed and condition will not lie. “The national selection is a first step, but I still have a long way to go,” says Quinlen. “The focus is now mainly on my hitting technique, there is still some room for improvement”.
When asked with whom he would like to trade places for a day, Quinlen answers: “With Viktor Axelsen, the current number one in the world. I think it would be nice to know what it’s like to play at the top level!
