The Uncertain Future of Emre Can at Borussia Dortmund: Contract Extension Still in Question

In July, Emre Can will start his last year of contract at Borussia Dortmund. The future of the national player at BVB is therefore still unclear. And although there is a first tendency, a possible extension is still stuck in some places.

As the “Ruhr Nachrichten” writes, both sides could in principle imagine expanding their cooperation. However, the details still need to be discussed.

It is clear for the Dortmund club leadership that Can should no longer receive a long-term contract. There will no longer be a contract for four or even five years for the 29-year-old. The only thing conceivable is a new working paper that would then run for two to three years.

At the same time, Borussia is probably not ready to continue employing the center player under the current conditions. Similar to other BVB veterans before him, Can would have to forego salary to secure a new contract.

According to media reports, the leading player recently earned around ten million euros a year and was therefore one of the top earners.

Can could even become BVB captain

It is currently unclear to what extent he is willing to accommodate the BVB leadership led by sports director Sebastian Kehl. However, if an agreement is not reached, the former Leverkusen player could probably leave the Revierklub this summer.

This was recently reported by “Sport1”. According to this, BVB absolutely wants to prevent a free transfer of the six in the coming year.

The Dortmunders would much prefer Can to stay than a sale. If he extends the contract with the Black and Yellows, he may even have an even more important role than before.

“Sport Bild” recently revealed that Can is a hot contender for the captaincy alongside Gregor Kobel. Marco Reus should think about passing on the bandage.
