The Olympic Flame Returns to Paris After 16 Years: Details and Challenges Revealed

She had not returned to Paris since 2008. The Olympic flame had stopped in the capital that year before continuing on its way to Beijing (China). Sixteen years later, it will make its big comeback in the City of Light. Its passage is scheduled for July 14 and 15, 2024.

A brief stay before returning to set fire to the Olympic cauldron for more than two weeks on the occasion of the opening ceremony on July 26. The main stages of the route were unveiled this Friday morning by the organizing committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games during a press conference in the large amphitheater of the Sorbonne (Ve).

After the lighting ceremony which will take place on April 16 in Olympia, Greece, the flame will land in France in Marseille by sea on May 8. An arrival that will officially launch the festivities in France, where around sixty departments and more than 400 cities will be crossed.

In Paris, the flame will therefore arrive on the day of the national holiday. A July 14, 2024 which will be apart in more ways than one since, according to information collected by Le Parisien, the traditional parade will not a priori take place on the Champs-Élysées. Place de la Concorde (VIII) – where this parade usually ends – will be under construction. Infrastructure will be being installed to host events in new urban sport disciplines such as skateboarding. The tricolor troops should therefore parade either on Avenue Foch or on the Cours de Vincennes from Place de la Nation.

What about the flame? All the details on his Parisian career will be revealed on Monday July 3 at the Carnavalet museum (IIIrd), as Anne Hidalgo announced this Friday morning. In the meantime, the socialist mayor has unveiled 4 emblematic places through which the flame will pass on July 14 and 15 and when it returns on July 26: the National Assembly (7th), the Town Hall (4th), the square de la Concorde (8th century) and the Roland-Garros stadium (16th century).

Other known information: the twenty Parisian districts will be crossed by the flame. The 9th century town hall indicates in particular that it will pass through the Place de l’Opéra, without further details to date. The Carnavalet museum, dedicated to the history of Paris, should also host the flame on July 14 or 15. Contacted, the team of this cultural place located in the heart of the Marais claims to have “no confirmation for the moment”, but “we know that we are part of the places approached”, indicates the establishment. Insep, the training ground for French teams, is also supposed to be there.

After a first visit to the capital on July 14 and 15, the flame will then travel through all the other departments of Île-de-France between July 19 and 26. Ten thousand people in total – known or not – will take it in turns to wear it during these two months of festivities throughout France. The names of the main personalities should be revealed next January.

The specter of a turbulent passage in 2008

It remains for the authorities to manage the securing of the course. Gérald Darmanin has already warned the prefects in a letter sent on April 28. “I ask you to pay particular attention to the protest movements and claims likely to bring out actions with high media visibility”, warns the Minister of the Interior.

Implicitly, the specter of the last eventful passage of the flame in Paris in April 2008, on the occasion of the Beijing Games. Pro-Tibetan demonstrators disrupted the event. The last relays had even had to be canceled and the flame had finally arrived at the Charléty stadium (13th century)… by bus!

A scenario that the public authorities fear to see reproduced with other watchwords. This Friday morning, the Saccage 2024 collective organized a demonstration on the sidelines of the press conference “Let’s extinguish the Olympic flame” to denounce in particular “the extravagant cost requested from the departments crossed”.

A few weeks ago, opponents of the pension reform also launched a slogan that has gone viral on social networks, #PasdeRetraitPasdeJO. Failing to obtain the withdrawal of the pension reform, they threaten to disrupt the smooth running of the Games.
