The New A2 Series: Changes and Challenges for the 2023-2024 Season

TRIESTE. The success of Cremona, dry 3-0 in the series against Forlì, and the promotion of Vanoli which reaches Pistoia in the next Serie A championship defined the picture of the A2 series 2023-2024.

A year that will see 24 teams at the starting line and which will act as a bridge to the reform of the championships launched by the federal council on 2 March and which will lead to achieving the structure desired by the Fip starting from the 2024/2025 tournaments.

THE NEW A2 Starting next October there will no longer be an obligation for the Unders, so each team will be able to compose the roster relying exclusively on the seniors with the obligation to pay a contribution of 12 thousand euros for the creation of a special fund that will go to reward the most virtuous clubs. Those, that is, that the Unders will decide to field them anyway (the age group is still to be clarified, it is assumed they could be from 2003 onwards). Again with the same fund, greater incentives will be provided for participation in the inter-regional phases of the championships of excellence.

The possibility of registering two non-EU foreigners remains confirmed, the minimum capacity of the arenas will be increased to two thousand spectators and the guarantee to be presented for registration set at 100 thousand euros. The championship of the season which will begin in October will include the usual two promotions but there will be 6 relegations: with the two relegated from Serie A and the two promoted from the cadet series, the final set-up of 20 teams will be reached with the formation of a probable single group and the restoration of the two promotions and three relegations per season.

THE FORMULA Just the transition phase which foresees six relegations will make the next A2 series tournament even more uncertain and fought. The last of each group and the losers of the play-outs between the teams classified from tenth to thirteenth will go down.

In terms of promotion, Pallacanestro Trieste will have to deal with a pack of fierce opponents who are determined to re-propose themselves among the favorites for the jump in category. First of all those premature exits in the play-offs that have just ended (Cantù, Udine, Turin, Treviglio and the just eliminated Forlì) but also ambitious formations such as Fortitudo Bologna and Cento.

Without forgetting that Tezenis Verona which, with the reconfirmation of coach Ramagli, has already made it clear that it wants to erase the shame of relegation and attempt an immediate return to the top flight. —
