The Implications of Shari Bossuyt’s Positive Drug Test on Olympic Dreams

A few weeks ago, Shari Bossuyt’s world collapsed: the 22-year-old rider tested positive for letrozole metabolite during a checkup in France. That is the same substance on which cyclo-cross rider Toon Aerts tested positive at the same French place.

Her team Canyon – SRAM Racing put Bossuyt on hold, she cries out her innocence and hopes to wake up from this nightmare as soon as possible. How does Lotte Kopecky – as an involved party – view the case?

“I’ve been asked that question before, but I don’t really want to give my opinion about it. The only thing that really bothers me is that people very quickly have prejudices about this case,” the Belgian top responds.

“Maybe I see the good in people. You don’t put your hand in the fire for anyone. But put yourself in the place of Shari: she’s a young woman who gets a lot of attention now. I think it’s a real shame that certain people react that way.”

Lotte Kopecky is of course concerned about their planning towards Paris 2024. “That planning is running into the water. At the moment I don’t see any Games happening in the team race with Shari.”

“Although I always keep hoping for that. I hope that the matter evolves quickly, that clarity comes quickly. That she knows where she stands and I also know where I stand.”

“If she is acquitted or declared innocent, I will definitely go for that madison with 200 percent,” Kopecky promises.
