Genova. More medals for the shipment of CUS Genova and the University of Genoa ai National University Championships of Camerino 2023 which also shines in the disciplines of Judo and Taekwondo.

Three medals in judo

The judo expedition, led by Mirco Mirengo, obtained a gold, a silver and a bronze which enrich the CUS Genova medal collection.

First of all the gold of Michela Piaggio, able to snatch the highest step on the podium in the -57 kg in the Genoese “derby” against Isabella Rimondo, with the CUS dominating the category. Bronze instead for Laura De Martino, in the -52 kg. Finally, fifth place for Vanessa Ferruccio, conquered in the -63 kg.

“I am very satisfied – comments Michela Piaggio, medical student and Pro Recco Judo athlete – The result came after quite a few months of intense training, hard work and sacrifices, given that I graduate in two weeks . So I’m very satisfied, I wanted to do well and the result has arrived. I’m also happy to have made the final with my CUS partner, perhaps the most difficult match of the competition. A good final and I thank the coach Mirco Mirengo for the support”.

“It went well – clear Isabella Rimondo, sports science student and athlete of Sharin Judo Savona – Finally a nice medal has arrived after months of competitions that didn’t satisfy us so much, but the sacrifices paid off. We fought for the final and I was pleased to fight with Michela, whom we had never fought against. I’m satisfied with the race and I thank Mirco for these days”.

Laura Martino, Sports Science student and Sharing Judo Savona athlete: “The race itself went well, I wasn’t in my best shape. Let’s say it could have gone better but I’m satisfied because I wasn’t trained like all the other times. First university medal and I certainly thank Mirco “.

“The race itself went well, I wasn’t in my best shape – he says Vanessa Ferreccio, Biomedical Engineering student and Pro Recco Judo athlete – Let’s say it could have been better but I’m satisfied because I wasn’t trained like all the other times. First university medal and I certainly thank Mirco “.

Conclude Mirco Mirengo, coach of Sharin Judo Savona and of the university team of CUS Genova: “It went quite well, four girls and seconds like CUS. So, although we weren’t many, the ranking smiles at us. I would say well, we got the best we could get, maybe more. There weren’t many athletes but the level was very high, with athletes of national level and experience abroad”.

Record taekwondo expedition for Cus Genova

Excellent news from the taekwondo team led by Riccardo Persano, capable of improving the medal table conquered in Cassino in 2022 thanks to a haul of two golds, two silvers and one bronze.

The first gold medal of the expedition was collected by Gabriele Romano in the green belt shapes, followed by the Genoese “derby”. In the -49 kg final Sofia Ciarlo improved on the 2022 silver medal by winning the gold in the final against Brigida Bernardi, with CUS Genova thus dominating the category. Silver also for Yago Campanella in the -58 kg and Gaia Gavarone with a medal again who, after the silver in 2022, also conquers the bronze in the -57 kg.

“I prepared constantly day after day, I aimed to win and have fun – he declares Gabriel Roman, Computer Engineering student and athlete of the Taekwondo Athletic School Tigullio – Outside of this context it was a great experience. In the competition I was the first to form, the one with the highest score, also giving the other athletes a bit of a gap. Good score for my category especially considering the experience, since I’ve been in it for a few years. I wanted to get back into the game with sport after a few years of not doing physical activity due to my studies. I thank my teacher, Maurizio Brizzolara, who motivated me in every possible way, as well as Francesco Mariani, my form coach, who helped me get to the result. I thank CUS for everything he has provided us, it was a great experience ”.

This is the comment of Sofia Ciarlo, Mechanical Engineering student at the Savona Campus and athlete at Olimpia Savona: “This medal comes in a not very happy period, as it comes from the Italian Cup. I fought in Rome on Monday and it didn’t go as I had hoped. Two races in the same week with exams in between, let’s say it’s a reward that was needed. I thank my family, who supported me, and my teacher, Giovanni Caddeo”.

Bridget Bernardi, medical student and Marassi Taekwondo athlete: “Definitely a wonderful experience to be back on the national podium, even more thrilling being in the final with an expedition partner, against whom we always catch each other. This time she won, I hope I win next time. I dedicate this result to grandmother Bibi, a pediatrician. I am very happy with the work done with the master, Riccardo Persano, in preparation for and during the race”.

“I was hoping to finish second like last year, but this year’s bronze is also of great value to me because this weight category is above mine, which wasn’t expected – she reveals Gaia Gavarone, Chemistry student and athlete of the Genoa Taekwondo School – I felt good, I fought well and I feel satisfied with this bronze. I thank my coach and my parents and my grandparents, who are supporting me, and my coach Pietro Fugazza and the athletic trainer Angelo Capozza”.

These are the words of Iago Campanella, Economics and Commerce student and Marassi Taekwondo athlete: “It’s certainly a result I’ve been aiming for for a long time, a national-level podium for the first time. Last year we lost in the quarterfinals, I was looking for this result. I didn’t expect it as I had to run a lot to lose weight, arriving at the race in a non-optimal situation. I thank my teacher Persano and partner Moreno Monticelli for cutting weight and for always keeping me focused”.

Richard Persano, Regional Combat Commissioner of FITA Liguria and technician of the university team, declares: “We are certainly very satisfied with the performance because we obtained two new gold medals and confirmed the boys who took a medal last year. The competition has come at a not so happy time, as it is only three days after the Coppa Italia and in the middle of the summer session, so our athletes are jumping through hoops to be here today. They have managed to perform very well with very good performances. We even dominated in the 49 kg making a final with two of our athletes. We are super satisfied, the goal for next year is to go from two golds to at least three. We thank CUS for supporting us”.
