Soccer pro Quincy Promes charged with drug smuggling

Quincy Promes earns millions as a professional soccer player and is apparently still involved in criminal offenses. Now he has to go to court.

On Sunday Quincy Promes was still on the pitch for Spartak Moscow, two days later an indictment followed. According to the public prosecutor, the Dutchman belongs to a group of smugglers in which 1,300 kilograms of cocaine were found in January 2020 in the port of the Belgian city of Antwerp. The value of the drugs: 75 million euros.

The preliminary hearing will take place next Monday. The ex-Dutch international will not be present due to contractual obligations with his club, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

In another case, the public prosecutor’s office had demanded two years in prison for Promes just last March. At a family party in July 2020, he stabbed a cousin in the knee with a knife and seriously injured him.

Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches, was under contract with Ajax Amsterdam at the time. In early 2021 he moved to Moscow. He played his last game for Oranje at the European Championships in summer 2021 against the Czech Republic in Hungary.
