Slovakian record goalscorer Hamsik retires

Slovakia international Marek Hamsik has announced the end of his playing career. “I am retiring from football after the current season. It’s been an amazing 19 years in professional football,” the 35-year-old shared on Instagram on Thursday.

The midfielder, who is currently under contract with the Turkish first division club Trabzonspor, has made 136 appearances in the Slovakian national team and is the record goalscorer with 26 goals.

As a longtime captain, he led his home country to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2016 European Championship in France.

From 2007 to 2019 Hamsik played for SSC Napoli. With 520 competitive games, he holds the club record for the most appearances with the current Italian champions. After short stopovers in China and Sweden, Hamsik moved to Turkey in 2021 and became champion with Trabzonspor in 2022.
