Singapore Hosts First eSports Olympic Week: Showcasing a Wide Range of Electronic Sports Disciplines

Singapore, Jun 22 (EFE).- Since Thursday, Singapore will host the first eSports Olympic Week, hosting the final phases of a total of ten electronic sports disciplines as diverse as motorsports, baseball, archery or dance.

The event, promoted by the International Olympic Committee, aims to support the development of eSports within the Olympic Movement and will bring together more than a hundred athletes from almost twenty countries until Sunday.

The event, held at the Suntec convention center of the city-State, hosts the finals of the 2023 eSports Olympic Series, whose qualifying phases have been taking place since March.

The tests are played in their respective video games and supports, for example, motorsports through Gran Turismo (PlayStation), while baseball does so through WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros (Nintendo) or archery with Tic Tac Bow (Android).

Other disciplines are dancing through the Just Dance franchise, taekwondo with Virtual Taekwondo, chess on the Chess.com website, sailing via Virtual Regatta, shooting thanks to the popular Fortnite, cycling through the video game Zwift and tennis thanks to Tennis Clash.

Among the participants in this international competition are athletes from India, China, Spain, Singapore, Brazil, Japan, Chile, the United States or France, among other countries.

The IOC recognized esports as a “sports activity” in 2017 and they are part of a global strategy to attract young people to the Olympic Movement and embrace technological advances.

Although its inclusion in the Olympic Games still seems distant.

Parallel to the competitions, a forum is also being held, which will bring together Singaporean Minister of Culture and Youth Alvin Tan and Alibaba Group Chairman of Business Development Chris Tung, among others, to discuss various issues related to the future of esports.

And exhibition matches in five other games: Rocket League, Virtual Table Tennis, Arena Games Triathlon, Street Fighter 6 and NBA2k23.

In the last decade the eSports sector has registered millionaire growth, although the IOC refuses to integrate, at least in this edition, violent and generally more popular games such as Call of Duty or Counter Strike.
