Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) will look for his 33rd victory next weekend in the Formula One in it Spanish Grand Prix, in front of his fans and at the Montmeló circuit (Barcelona). The scene of his thirty-second and up to now last victory in the premier class -more than ten years ago-; also coinciding with the thirty-third time that the event has been held at the Circuit de Catalunya.
The Asturian double world champion, in a second youth at the age of 41 and third in the world; has become the great boot feeling of a season in which -with five podiums in the first six races- he is the only one who has faced the very dominant Red Bull. Team for which the Dutchman Max Verstappen leads the championship with 144 points, 39 more than his teammate, the Mexican Sergio Perez; and with 51 advantage over him.
With a car that last year was the seventh on the grid and that has made spectacular progress thanks to the important investment whose finishing touch was the signing of the Asturian star -turned into the true flagship of the Lawrence Stroll team, the father of his new partner, the Canadian Lance Stroll-, Alonso started the season with three podiums in a row: by finishing third in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia. He signed his ‘worst’ result of the year by finishing fourth in Azerbaijan, just one second off the podium in Baku; and he again finished third in Miami (USA). And, after the suspension -due to the floods that caused a true human tragedy- of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, in Imola (Italy), he astonished the world again last Sunday by finishing second in Monaco; where Verstappen achieved his fourth victory of a course in which his colleague ‘Checo’ scored the other two.
The qualitative leap taken on the streets of the beautiful principality of the Côte d’Azur brings it even closer to 33: the figure that has set the trend in F1 for months, in reference to what would be the next victory for the new leader of Aston Martin. A triumph that could arrive this Sunday, before his own audience; who will also encourage his compatriot Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), sixth in the contest and who has not had the desired start to the season; but that he will not give up on achieving, at least, his first podium of the course in Montmeló.
The Spanish Grand Prix, which will be held for the fifty-second time, debuted in the F1 World Championship in 1951 -in Pedralbes, also in Barcelona-; and, after being disputed in different venues, since 1991 it has been fixed in Montmeló; which coincidentally reaches its issue number 33. Added incentive to take into account this weekend.
