Having just had a dream season with Weatherford College, Gatineau resident Robin Villeneuve is getting closer and closer to his goal of playing in Major League Baseball (MLB). Olivier Maurice collected comments from the young sensation who has been playing baseball since he was young.

Robin tells us from the outset what has improved in his style of play during the last season and what he wants to improve in the future.

“In recent months, I would tell you that my progress has been in my striking power with the bat. Also, I believe that training with my friends over the Christmas break has allowed me to be successful this summer. I improved on my way of approaching a pitcher, I was simply more mature, ”he admits.

“As for my weak points, I can tell you that I will work more on my races and that I will concentrate on my defence. These are aspects on which I will devote myself shortly. This will allow me to be a complete player, ”he adds.

MULTIPLE MODELS FOR ROBIN

Robin had only good words for Sébastien Boucher, his trainer who allowed him to become better through his advice. “[Il]was the head coach who had the most impact on me. Séb is the guy with whom I had the pleasure of practicing for five years at Sport-études. He was the one who showed me how to hit a ball properly. I owe him a lot of credit. He brought out the best in me! »

The baseball player is inspired by the best because it will benefit him to reach the highest peaks.
“I follow Freddie Freeman’s journey closely. He was voted most valuable player in the major leagues, it’s not nothing. I like the way he positions himself in front of the pitcher, I also like the way he hits the ball. Of course, his maturity and his leadership are important assets in his game. That means a lot to me,” he admits.

REMARKABLE AND RECORD SEASON

Robin, this athlete with immense potential, reflected on his high quality performances during his conversation with Olivier and he offered his first impressions of a record he managed to set. “Individually, I had a very good season. My attacking side had a direct impact on our results. I had a few more difficult games, but I corrected my mistakes as soon as possible in order to come back strong. Collectively, it went well. We made it to the Worlds Series and our team lost in the semi-finals. The chemistry was great! »

The year 2023 is for the moment unforgettable for this young man from the region. Indeed, he broke many records including one of Abraham Toro who is still considered to this day as one of the best baseball players in the world. Robin Villeneuve thus became the new record holder for the most RBIs in a season for a Quebec baseball player who played in the network of American universities and colleges.

“It’s definitely quite special to surpass the mark of a great player like Abraham. If you had asked me if it was possible at the start of the season, I would have told you that it was unlikely. That being said, I have had some great times with Weatherford College. I didn’t think I would have been so dominant. I am proud of this accomplishment,” he added.

ROBIN HOLDS ON TO HIS DREAM

The MLB Draft came up in my interview with this former hockey player and he says he’s aware he can still catch the eye of a club. Until then, he will be able to enjoy the good times he will have with his new organization, that of the University of Tennessee. “The University of Tennessee approached me at the end of the season. Their head coach came to see one of my games and he really liked me as a player. It is certain that I am happy with my decision to join such a prestigious university. Several good players have come out of there with a job well done. I can’t wait for the new season to arrive so that I can prove myself, ”concludes the one who was selected on the first all-American team.
