Reds promote Elly de la Cruz from Triple-A

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds have promoted shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who will make his major league debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Reds announced Tuesday that they called up the 21-year-old from Triple-A to give one of their hottest talents his first opportunity.

De La Cruz will take Nick Senzel’s place on the roster. This after Senzel went on the 10-day disabled list with a knee injury.

Baseball America ranked the Dominican as the third best prospect, citing his seductive combination of power and speed. His batting average is .298 with 12 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a 1.031 OPS with Triple-A Louisville.

After signing him as a teenager from the Dominican Republic, De la Cruz hit 28 homers and 47 stolen bases in Class A and Double-A last year.

The Reds surprisingly remain on the fringes of the NL wild-card berths this season thanks to the contributions of their young talent.

Rookie Matt McLain hit a .329 average at shortstop, Hunter Green, 23, has dominated at times and Andrew Abbott pitched six scoreless innings in his major league debut Monday against Milwaukee.
