Racism Scandal Overshadows German U21 Football Match against Israel

When football suddenly becomes a minor matter…

The more than meager 1: 1 of the German U21s at the European Championships in Georgia and Romania (June 21 to July 8) against Israel was overshadowed by a racism scandal. Many idiots abused and insulted Jessic Ngankam (22/Hertha) and Youssoufa Moukoko (18/BVB) in the worst possible way. And only because both had missed a penalty.

Moukoko blundered in the 3rd minute with a poorly shot penalty, but Ngankam’s well-taken penalty was saved superbly.

Coach Toni Di Salvo (44): “Before the game I talked to Youssoufa and Kevin Schade. And we clearly agreed that whichever of the two feels best should shoot.”

But this agreement was not kept. Di Salvo: “Youssoufa then missed the first penalty and then I wasn’t able to talk to Kevin about why he didn’t shoot the second penalty. I don’t know if maybe he didn’t want to. Jessic came on, converted our last penalty against Japan and felt safe. The goalkeeper saved the penalty superbly, you have to say that. But still: Actually, Youssoufa or Kevin has to shoot the second penalty.”

Moukoko was apparently surprised that Ngankam suddenly took the penalty: “I’m always brave. If he had given me the ball, I shot again. I’m not afraid.”

But it’s also a fact: Despite two penalties, Germany had enough chances to win the game clearly. But just like in the friendlies at the training camp in Prad in South Tyrol, Germany simply missed too many good opportunities.

Di Salvo: “The goal conversion was definitely an issue for us in the last 10 days. We pointed out that we have to take our chances consistently.”

In the next game on Sunday against the Czech Republic (6 p.m./Sat.1) it definitely has to get better – because the game is almost a final for progress, a win after the disappointing 1-1 against Israel is a must!
