Public debt in states and municipalities exceeds 680 thousand million pesos: IBD – El Sol de México

A report from the General Directorate of Finance of the Belisario Domínguez Institute (IBD) of the Senate of the Republic, revealed that in the first quarter of 2023, the debt of the federal entities, municipalities and their public entities amounted to 680 thousand 933.8 million pesos (mdp), a figure higher by 3.5 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year but lower by 0.5 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2022.

The subnational debt represents 55.8 percent of federal participations and 2.8 percent of the state Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the entities with the highest per capita indebtedness are Nuevo León, Chihuahua, Quintana Roo, Coahuila, Mexico City, and Sonora.

The report was prepared by the researcher Vladimir Herrera González who points out that the federal entities that presented a higher level of indebtedness per capita compared to the total were: Nuevo León with 16,539.1 pesos; Chihuahua with 13,206.2 pesos; Quintana Roo with 11,874.5 pesos, Coahuila with 11,811.6 pesos, Mexico City with 10,429.5 pesos and Sonora with 9,672.2 pesos.

On the contrary, the least indebted were: Puebla with 878.3 pesos, Guerrero with 859.9 pesos, Querétaro with 12.4 pesos and Tlaxcala with 6.1 pesos.

In this period, the municipalities that showed the highest debt in millions of pesos were: Tijuana with 2,331.9, Hermosillo with 1,735.6, Monterrey with 1,618.0, Guadalajara with 1,229.3, Zapopan with 1,048.4, Mexicali with 930.0, Benito Juárez with 890.7, León with 873.3 and San Nicolás de los Garza with 843.0.

In addition, the IBD warns that, according to the alert system of the Ministry of Finance, 29 federal entities show a sustainable level of indebtedness.

Two states have a debt level under observation: Coahuila and Chihuahua, while Tlaxcala reports zero debt, which is why it was not included in the measurement.
