Peter Vandenbempt about Estonia-Belgium: “Lukaku was the captain who led the battle” | European Championship qualifying round

The mind of Thibaut Courtois hovered a bit over the match against Estonia, but Belgium could have played without a goalkeeper.

His replacement Matz Sels only had to pick some balls and bring them back into the field. Estonia may have had a lot of good will, but too little quality. It also didn’t kick between the posts once.

It is of course too short-sighted to conclude from this that it will also work without Courtois. You don’t need the best goalkeeper in the world for these kinds of games, but you do need the important ones, in which Courtois has often been important.

All in all, it was a very mediocre match from the Belgians. Actually, the level was even less than the first half hour against Austria, about which the national coach was already disappointed.

There was too little intensity and guts. Tedesco had made major changes to his team, but that didn’t work. Trésor as number 10 in the back of Romelu Lukaku for example.

But you can always count on Lukaku in the end. A leader who leads the battle.

The second half was therefore superfluous, a kind of health walk.

This concludes the season. The Belgians are well on their way to finishing in the top two and thus qualify for the European Championship next year.

The only question then remains: will Thibaut Courtois also be there?
