Painful Sunday for the Legionnaires – Guggenberger Legionnaires Regensburg

Regensburg not only loses the Bayern derby and the championship lead in the last inning in Haar, but also two players through injury.

The picture the day after could hardly have been more symbolic: Marius Wolf came into the stadium on crutches, a painful result of the last innings of the Guggenberger Legionnaires against the Haar Disciples. Wolf, actually working as a closer with the task of bringing the win home, received a hard hit directly on the foot and was unable to continue playing.

The young newcomer from Mannheim was the second legionnaire this Sunday to leave the field after an injury. Just an inning earlier, David Dinski had been caught at his former place of work.

The injuries to Dinski and Wolf, the actual extent of which the investigations must show these days, were certainly the most painful consequences of a game that had plenty of drama, oddities and memorabilia in store.

errors and bars

The game had already started unpromisingly for Regensburg. One of the extremely rare errors by catcher Elias von Garßen allowed the hosts to take the lead. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that Ronnie Sweeny equalized.

In period six, the oddities took their course. Trevor Holloway had taken over the job on the mound after Joe Cedano de Leon and Finn Freisberg. Right from his first action he conceded a rather rare balk. A little later the Umpire missed the Regensburger Reliefer the next balk, but this time with countable consequences. The Disciples took the lead and extended it in the same inning.

Lots of drama at the end

In the eighth game section, the legionnaires once again successfully defended themselves against the impending defeat. Elie Musoni, who came on as a pinch runner for the injured David Dinski, and David Grimes equalised.

But all of that was more of a background story for a final inning that really got down to business. Regensburg made the start. Marius Wolf, Daniel Patrice and Erik Harms even gave the legionnaires the lead.

But Haar didn’t want to give in that day, Regensburg were unlucky again due to Wolf’s injury. After Haar equalized, there was a lot of evidence for an extra inning. However, Ronnie Sweeny unintentionally put a stop to this. An error by the Regensburg first baseman allowed the Disciples to end the game via walkoff.

The Guggenberger Legionnaires are thus in second place in the table with three defeats. Already next Saturday, Regensburg will continue with a double header at Hünstetten Storm.
