After Dominic Thiem’s second-round exit at the ATP Challenger in Heilbronn on Thursday, it’s clear: Paris round of 16, Sebastian Ofner, will replace the former world number three as the best Austrian in the new men’s tennis world rankings from Monday.
Thiem could have intercepted the Styrian with a better performance in Germany.
Moritz Thiem, who has been managing both his brother and Ofner since this year, said when asked by APA on Friday about Thiem’s three-set defeat in Heilbronn: “It was just not a good game except for the first set. He has to start now, to constantly transform the shots that he already plays in training into the match.” Otherwise Thiem will “always have a hard time against everyone”.
In terms of Ofner, the exact tournament schedule is still being worked out, the Styrian has completely new opportunities with his advance to rank 80 (he can theoretically be overtaken by a few players, note). The next fixed assignment after a 14-day break is the lawn challenger in Ilkley (GBR) from June 18th.
