Great honor for Lakers superstar and veteran LeBron James!
According to a “Twitter” posting by the FIA automobile association, the most successful scorer in NBA history will wave the “drapeau tricolore” at the 91st edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, opening the most famous endurance race.
James joins the list with clay court king Rafael Nadal, who was allowed to open the race in Le Mans in 2018. Since 1949, it has traditionally been reserved for selected prominent personalities to practice the honorable ritual and thus initiate the beginning of a genuine racing classic.
James only available through Lakers sweep
“I am delighted to welcome LeBron James to the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. LeBron is a true sporting legend whose list of achievements and records deserves respect and admiration,” said Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l ‘Ouest according to reports from “Motorsport-Magazin.com”.
However, LeBron James would have preferred to do something else himself, because James is only available for the big race event due to the early departure of the LA Lakers, who were embarrassingly swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.
Nevertheless, the 38-year-old is very happy about his choice: “It is an honor for me to be part of this historic moment in motorsport and to help celebrate the centenary of one of the greatest sporting events in the world.”
62 cars are taking part in the 100th anniversary of the classic.
