Monty Williams will lead the Detroit Pistons.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the former Phoenix Suns star has accepted a six-year, $78.5 million offer, the most lucrative in NBA history for a head coach.

Williams, 51, was fired by the Suns on May 13 after a four-year stint with the team that ended in a six-game elimination to the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the playoffs.

In 309 regular season games over that span, he posted a 194-115 record. He also led the Suns to a 27-19 playoff record with an appearance in the NBA Finals, which they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. He was also named coach of the year in 2022.

The man who played 456 games as a player in the NBA will succeed Dwane Casey as the 37th head coach in Pistons history.

Detroit finished last season overall by a 17-65 record and holds the fifth overall pick in the upcoming draft.

The Pistons haven’t made the playoffs since 2019 and have appeared only twice in 14 years. They haven’t won a playoff since 2008.
